Constraint Driven Engineering Design Synthesis is a methodology where a mechanism is created and refined iteratively based on functional and operational requirements defined as constraints. Once the mechanism is determined, the geometry of the mechanism is generated as a “consequence” of play of the use-case definitions (also called configurations) and mathematical functions.
CEAD is a first level computer aided software tool that an engineer would use to sketch multiple concepts. CEAD is then used to synthesize the geometry of the mechanism by imposing functional requirements as math constraints to be fulfilled on the design. CEAD simulation can be used to quickly assess practicality of a design concept.
CEAD leverages Constraint Driven Engineering Design Synthesis to shorten design cycles and thus time to market. It enables engineers to use their engineering skills and experience in design evaluation and not impose serious software skills in using tools
Today, engineers use iterative methods and mulitple tools to achieve the desired design goals which can be time consuming and non-optimal. The new methodology and CEAD together provide a superior solution compared to a brute force iterative method because it encapsulates all the customer needs into the problem at one go. A single tool that can integrate math and geometry shortens design cycle time by reducing iterations and design re-spins.
At the conceptual stage many design ideas need to be evaluated 2d is a natural choice like sketching on paper. 2d sketch is faster & simpler 3d design can be expensive Investing in 3d at the beginning might commit one to a particular design idea
